PIER RULES:
New pier rules to be applied retroactively to existing piers
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently completed the final draft of new administrative rules regulating the size and placement of piers (Wis. Admin. Code Ch. NR 326). The proposed pier rules will apply to both new piers and existing piers. If your pier does not meet the DNR’s new standards, you must pay $50 or $300 and obtain a permit to keep your pier. Any pier that does not meet the requirements will need to be modified or removed to ensure compliance with the new standards, even if you’ve owned it for decades. Talk about pier pressure.

The Wisconsin HOMEOWNERS Alliance is working to stop these rules and to ensure that existing piers can remain in place without a permit, and that the right of waterfront property owners to place a pier is protected. If you have any concerns about the new pier rules and regulations, contact Governor Doyle at (608) 266-1212 and your legislators at (800) 362-9472. Ask them to tell the DNR to leave your pier alone, and to go jump in the lake.
